To animate a painting, place a clear piece of glass on top of the scanner bed with lights above the scanner (as in the sand example). Then paint an image on top of the glass and scan it (you will be scanning the underside of your painting). Alter the painted image with your fingers, a paintbrush, or whatever tools you are using, and scan it again. To keep the paint from drying out, mix colored inks or acrylic paints with a medium that will keep them moist, such as acrylic paint extender.
